General Information on Boilers

Boiler refers to a unit or system that heats water to high temperatures then circulates the heated water either in the form of steam in some cases or hot water at temperatures lower than steam and pump the heated water to deliver the heat to the space. The delivery method varies slightly but for the most part, either steam or hot water fan coils or baseboard radiation are the primary methods of putting the heat into the space that required heat. Many low-pressure steam systems were the system of choice in older very high-end homes and for good reason. The steam radiators that were used delivered a very high amount of heat in a compact space. Even then the old steam radiators were oversized enough that over the years as the old steam boilers began to be updated and converted to a hot water lower temperature system the radiators were adequate to heat the space at somewhat lower temperatures. Boilers utilize a number of different fuels including natural gas boilers, propane boilers, fuel oil boilers, and more.
